Napa CA, Valley Wine Tour

The Napa Valley Wine Tour is brought to you by Excell Limousines to offer an array of information to help you determine the Napa Valley Wine Tour of your dreams. We accommodate any type of Napa Valley limousine service you desire.

The rich and fertile Napa Valley is the crown jewel of the California Wine Country. This rich and fertile stretch of valley, a little over 35 miles long, is home to almost 440 wineries; including several large “estate” wineries, and many smaller “boutique” wineries. Several of the larger wineries, like Robert Mondavi, offer guided tours of their facilities including their underground limestone caves and storage casks.

To the Wappo Indians who first inhabited the valley, "Napa" meant a land of plenty. Spawning salmon filled the waterways, clouds of migrating waterfowl darkened the skies and the valley floor served as home to wildcats, elk, black bear and grizzlies. Wild grapes also grew in abundance, but it took early settlers such as George Calvert Yount to recognize the valley's potential for cultivating wine grapes. Establishing the first local homestead in what is now Yountville in 1836, Yount was the first to plant vineyards in the valley. Other early pioneers included John Patchett, who planted the first commercial vineyard; Dr. George Crane, who promoted the planting of grapevines through a series of newspaper articles; and Hamilton Walker Crabb, who experimented with more than 400 grape varieties.

Charles Krug is credited with establishing Napa Valley's first commercial winery in 1861, and by 1889 there were more than 140 wineries in operation, including Schramsberg (founded in 1862), Beringer (1876) and Inglenook (1879). In 1965, Napa Valley icon Robert Mondavi broke away from his family's Charles Krug estate to found his own. This was the first new large scale winery to be established in the valley since before prohibition.

Following the establishment of the Mondavi estate, the number of wineries in the valley continued to grow, as did the region's reputation. By the end of the nineteenth century there were more than one hundred and forty wineries in the area. Of those original wineries several still exist in the valley today including Charles Krug Winery, Shramsburg, Chateau Montelena and Beringer.

Napa County, once the producer of many different crops is known today for its wine industry, rising in the 1960s to the first rank of wine regions with France and Italy. The combination of natural beauty, pleasant Mediterranean climate, and proximity to San Francisco, Oakland, and Sacramento has made it into one of the United States' most desirable areas in which to live.

However, its citizens are famous for their resistance to suburban development, with the result that 33 of California's 58 counties--including many that are far from major urban areas--are more populous. Estates in the county, particularly those with views of San Pablo Bay, have been known to sell for nearly ten million dollars.

Today Napa Valley features more than four hundred wineries and grows many different grape varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Zinfandel, and other popular varietals. Napa Valley is visited by as many as five million people each year, making it the second most popular tourist destination in California, second only to Disneyland.

The Napa Valley Wine Region is often broken down into the following sub-regions: from the south to the north; Napa, Yountville, Oakville, Rutherford, St. Helena and Calistoga. The Napa Valley’s wines are highly regarded for their superior quality and diversity of style. The Napa Valley Wine Region encompasses nearly 297,000 acres, with more than 45,000 acres planted in grapes.

Some of the better know local wineries include: CakeBread, Peju, Franciscan, Silverado Hills, Stag’s Leap, Sterling, Domaine Chandon, Far Niente, Opus One, Plumpjack, Robert Mondavi, Silver Oak, Beaulieu, Beringer, Charles Krug, Joseph Phelps, and Louis Martini, Rombauer, Sutter Home, and Sattui.

Napa County is a county located north of the San Francisco Bay Area in the U.S. state of California. It is part of the Napa, California Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2000 the population is 124,279. The county seat is Napa.

Napa is widely considered one of the top American Viticulture areas in California, and all of the United States with a history dating back to the early nineteenth century. By the end of the nineteenth century there were more than one hundred and forty wineries in the area. Of those original wineries several still exist in the valley today including Charles Krug Winery, Shramsburg, Chateau Montelena and Beringer.

Viticulture in Napa suffered a setback when prohibition was enacted across the country in 1920. Furthering the damage was caused by an infestation of the phylloxera root louse which killed many of the vines through the valley. These two events caused many wineries to shut down and stalled the growth of the wine industry in Napa County for years. Following the Second World War, the wine industry in Napa began to thrive again.

In 1965, Napa Valley icon Robert Mondavi broke away from his family's Charles Krug estate to found his own. This was the first new large scale winery to be established in the valley since before prohibition.
